The exploding global demand for NP swabs required to collect samples for COVID-19 testing is fast becoming unsustainable. To compound this problem, NP swabs were historically manufactured in Italy and China, countries whose supply chains have been disrupted because they are at the center of the coronavirus outbreak.
This supply chain shortage of a critical testing component has lead Governments to pre-emptively seek alternative solutions, with many looking to 3D printing. 3D printing of the Formlabs Solution with Axial3D in the USA ensures the supply of this component to USA hospitals and testing centers can be managed, producing swabs to meet demand quickly and safely as possible.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and in partnership with USF Health and Northwell Health, Formlabs developed a 3D printed alternative that has cleared all required testing and certification and is in use across the USA.
These NP swabs are printed in biocompatible material designed for 3D printing Class I devices and has been rigorously tested with autoclaves, solvents, and implant systems.Testing the swabs was conducted by USF Health faculty researchers in the Departments of Radiology and Infectious Diseases in collaboration with Northwell Health.
All testing showed that the 3D printed nasal swabs perform equally to standard swabs used for testing for COVID-19.
